The Continuing Education department is back at it again with its services to students, faculty and dog owners alike. The department offers a 7-week dog obedience training course in hopes of reaching out to the community and correcting those bad manners our companions may have.

Continuing Education program assistant Mary Thaler is glad they offer this to students. Many students who come to college tend to get a pet for comfort and a lot of times those pets may not have the best behavior. This class is a good way for students to come and fix those troublesome tendencies and to teach their dogs how to become therapy dogs.

“Not only can they be better pet owners, but they can also learn to do something beneficial with their pets,” Thaler stated.

This hands-on course is perfect for dog owners who need help training their wonderful companions, or for anyone looking to socialize and make new friends. More details for the service can be found on the Georgia Southern Website.

Leslie Sprando, who has been a dog obedience instructor since 1983, leads this program. This retired school psychologists thinks it is beneficial to have a nice relationship with a dog. She offers this course as a way to not only build the relationship between pet and owner, but to build confidence in the person as well.

Having patience with training a dog translates into everyday life when it comes to dealing with stress, and being persistent in hopes of achieving a favorable outcome.

Patti Barber and her 1-year-old Beagle/mix Satie Mae participate in the course and love every minute of it. Barber loves the course because it helps her socialize and gives her a chance to meet dogs of different nature and tendencies. Mae was a rescue dog who Barber found in the middle of the road last year.

She is now on the pathway to becoming a service dog after completion of the course.
