COLLEGE TOWNS ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE 4TH MEAL CRAZE
Late night snacking has plagued Georgia Southern University campus and campuses around the nation and will for always be a tradition.
College students are always up late doing assignments and being good wholesome students right? So what better way to recharge their brains than with a late night snack.
There is a seductive fourth meal that happens sometime between 10 p.m. and dawn that college students just can’t get enough of.
Satisfying this fourth meal craving can be beneficial for many fast food restaurants and is something many college towns have noticed.
Overall, college students are 87 percent more likely to order late-night meals than the average diner, according to GrubHub.
Restaurants on or near a college campus have a tendency to stay open later than normal operating hours, especially on the weekend.
This is a wave statesboro eateries are definitely hopping on. Restaurants such as Cookout, Wendy's, Subway and Dominos have all followed suit to this late night food craze.
Insomnia Cookies being the latest edition to this trend.
Practices like these are always good for profit and are key to a businesses success in the area.
WSJ reports that it’s beneficial to extend hours because you can get more sales without any increase in rent.
Any successful business owner knows that staying open past normal operating hours is a big risk. It requires paying employees more, finding employees willing to work that late and a slight increase in utilities. Not to mention an increased safety risk.
Extra finances like this are miniscule in comparison to the increased profit and customer loyalty.
“I like that statesboro has a lot of food places that stay open late, it comes in handy on the weekends when I am out late partying with friends,” said Junior, Engineering Major Jessica Smith.
Having later business hours may be hard when it comes to finding employees, but it will also create more job opportunities in the area for people that want to work, or may only be available to work late nights.
Insomnia cookies, a fairly new business in Statesboro focuses its hours on the specific market of Late night snacking especially in college towns.
“We focus our stores in college towns simply because a lot of students are up late, so we provide that late night delivery service to satisfy those needs,” said Jermaine Johnson, Store Manager at Insomnia cookies.
Compared to the rest of americans,students order cookies 179 percent more according to studies done by Huffington Post
Insomnia has more than 70 locations across 20 U.S. states, most of which are located near colleges and universities. The 3 locations in Georgia are all within 1 mile of a University. University of Georgia, Georgia State University and our very own Georgia Southern University.
This location being the most recent in Georgia. Insomnia cookies is not franchise owned so its success is completely dependent upon the person opening it.
Another crowd favorite is Cookout. Cookout is another one of those eateries that stays open late to cater to the needs of college students. They focus primarily on fast, fresh and affordable food at times when the average person would be sleep.
Of the 183 locations (current and in-progress), 112 are in locations with moderate to large universities. With over 20 Georgia Locations, 12 are located within one mile of a college or university according to the data provided by Cook Out’s website.
Their choice in locations seems to cater to college student sensibilities.
It seems as if just about every fast food joint offers late hours in this town full of scholars.
Of the 112 Restaurants and fast food chains in statesboro at least 25-30 of these eateries are open until midnight or later.
“Statesboro doesn’t have much to offer, but it does have food, especially when I get hungry throughout the night,” Senior Public Relations major Carlton Taylor.
Orders between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. are twice as common with college kids according to studies done by the Huffington Post.
These After Hours eats affects more than just Statesboro.
Of the 200+ restaurants in Athens, Georgia near UGA, 50-60 of those are open until midnight or later.
