Nine-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Usain Bolt stripped of medal due to teammate failing drug test.

The decorated track star will no longer have one of his gold medals because fellow teammate Nesta Carter tested positive for a prohibited stimulant after the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bolt and the relay team will all be stripped of their medals for the 4x100 meter relay According to The New York Times.

For the past 3 Summer Olympics Bolt has won the 100 meter dash, the 200 meters and the 4x100 meter relay for a combined total of 9 gold medals. He is, or in this case was, tied for the most gold medals by any track athlete.

Like most Olympians, Carter had to go through a series of drug tests pre and post-race to ensure there was no use of prohibited substances. He initially tested negative, but after further tests “The International Olympic Committee announced Wednesday that Nesta Carter had tested positive for methlhexaneamine in a reanalysis of blood and urine samples from the 200 Olympics in Beijing” according to The Washington Post.

Carter ran first leg on the relay team in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. Many fans are shocked to see the fastest team in the world stripped of their medal. Even more people are saddened that the fastest man on earth will no longer have his 9 medals.

I feel bad for Bolt and his team, but that is just one of the many regulations that Olympians must undergo to ensure a fair race. I think drug tests should be implemented for more than just the professional level, for all sports in fact. For now, I know Nesta will think twice about trying to finesse the system.
